Earthquake Magnitude 5.6 felt from Jakarta to Cianjur

Aftershocks from a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Cianjur, West Java, have occurred 15 times. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an official statement on Monday, November 21, 2022, in response to the earthquake near Cianjur, West Java.


It is known that an earthquake happened at 13.21 WIB near Cianjur, West Java, at coordinates 6.86° LS; 107.01° East, or more precisely, on land in the Sukalarang region, Sukabumi, West Java, at a depth of 11 km. It is well recognized that the Cianjur earthquake has little tsunami potential.

"The modeling findings reveal that this earthquake has no tsunami potential," stated Daryono, the head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center.

The people is asked to remain cool and avoid being swayed by matters whose truth cannot be proven.

The earthquake was shallow, and it was assumed to be caused by the activity of the Cimandiri fault. A number of locations were affected by the earthquake, including Cianjur, Garut, Sukabumi, Bogor, Jakarta, and Depok.

The earthquake scattered a number of personnel at government buildings in Depok City.

"Because the shaking was fairly strong, all employees went outdoors in fright," said Sani, a Depok City Government employee.

He admitted to using the emergency stairs to descend from the seventh story of the Baleka II Building, the Depok City Government.

"I rushed from the seventh floor through the emergency stairs since no one dared to enter the elevator," he stated.

He stated that the emergency stairs were quite full at the time, and he too walked down with only his cell phone.

"I didn't have time to pack anything because I was at work, so I simply raced away with my mobile phone," he ended.
