In 1985, President Ronald Regan and the 99th Congress authorized The U.S. Mint to create a new Gold Bullion Coin. The result in 1986 was a coin whose design and name featured the very symbol of American freedom, The American Eagle Gold Coin. The coin became popular quickly and is today the world's most sought after Gold Bullion Coin. Gold Eagles are minted according to the durable 22-karat standard established for circulating gold coinage 350 years ago. Each coin contains its full, stated weight of pure gold, which by law must be taken from newly mined sources in America. Historic Design

Gold Eagles are also rich in history. The coins' obverse is based on world-renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens' design for the 1907 $20 gold coin. The reverse features a moving tribute to the unity of the American family, in which a male eagle, carrying an olive branch, soars above a female eagle that nests with her newborns.
