SATRIA for Healthy Internet in 3T Regions

By the end of 2024, the target number of signal receiver points or SATRIA-1 Satellite Earth Station terminals in villages will reach 20,000 terminals.

In her first visit, the Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid invited religious leaders in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), to support the realization of healthy internet for children and students. Menkomdigi emphasized the importance of utilizing digital space in a healthy and appropriate manner.

"The role of pastors is very important as religious leaders and educators in realizing healthy internet," she said, in a Dialogue with Religious Leaders at the Indonesia Raya Satellite Earth Station Site (SATRIA)-1, West Kupang, Kupang Regency, NTT, Wednesday (10/30/2024).

Menkomdigi Meutya Hafid hopes that the development of telecommunications infrastructure will be used for productive activities and be beneficial for the younger generation. "We want the development of digital infrastructure for children to be used optimally and not used for bad things. We ask for assistance so that the use of the internet for the community can be maximized, because the development of digital infrastructure is a big PR, not cheap, (infrastructure development budget) and also uses state money," said the former Chair of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

Commitment to Cooperation

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized the commitment to cooperation with stakeholders, including PT Satelit Nusantara Tiga in providing SATRIA-1 services for equal access to public service internet, especially in disadvantaged, outermost, and remote areas (3T). On that occasion, the Telecommunication and Informatics Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) revealed that by the end of 2024, the target number of signal receiver points or SATRIA-1 Satellite Earth Station terminals to support internet connections in villages will reach 20,000 terminals.

"Friends from BAKTI are targeting 20,000 terminals this year," said President Director of PT Satelit Nusantara Tiga Heru Dwikartono, as the operator of the SATRIA-1 service in Kupang, Wednesday (10/30/2024).

This was conveyed on the sidelines of accompanying the Minister of Communication and Digital when reviewing the SATRIA-1 Satellite Earth Station in Bolok Village, Kupang Regency. Heru said that currently the number of signal receivers or terminals that have been spread throughout the NTT region has reached 18,501 units.

This number is not only spread in government offices, but also spread in tourist areas, community activity centers, and others. He detailed that for government offices there are 3,744 signal booster units, in tourist locations 105 units, health services 923 units, and business services 96 units.

In addition, there are also 12,635 signal booster units for education, 411 for defense and security, 318 for community activity centers, 254 for places of worship, and 15 for public transportation.

Currently, the distribution of signal receivers is spread across several regions in Indonesia. On the island of Sumatra, the number reaches 5,515 units, Kalimantan 2,267 units, Sulawesi 2,814 units, North Maluku 359 units, Papua 689 units, Java 4,152 units, Bali Nusra 2,204 units, and finally Maluku 276 units.

For this reason, BAKTI continues to distribute terminals to a number of locations or points that have been determined to strengthen the internet. SATRIA-1, which has been operating since early 2024, aims to accelerate connections in the 3T region.

Kupang Station is one of 11 control stations on earth (gateways) built by the Ministry of Communication and Information-BAKTI. The earth stations are spread across Cikarang (West Java), Batam (Riau Islands), Manado (North Sulawesi), Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan), Tarakan (North Kalimantan), Pontianak (West Kalimantan), Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara), Ambon (Maluku), Manokwari (West Papua), Jayapura (Papua), and Timika (Central Papua). The Cikarang Earth Station is designated as the Primary Satellite Control Center Station and Network Operation Control. Each earth station location is equipped with a special antenna produced by a Chinese company, The North West China Research Institute of Electronic Equipment (NWIEE).

The SATRIA-1 satellite is the largest in Asia and the fifth in the world. The telecommunications device is used by the Indonesian Government to strengthen the internet network and digital services at 150 thousand points, especially in the 3T areas. The presence of SATRIA-1 can support school and Islamic boarding school activities, accelerate public services in regional government offices, data from local health centers and hospitals, and assist regional supervision by the TNI and Polri.

With the increase in internet speed embedded in SATRIA-1, the number of service points that must be covered (coverage) has been reduced. Initially, each service point had a capacity of 1 Mbps, but then the speed was increased to 4 Mbps. Therefore, it was reduced from the original 150 thousand points to only 50 thousand points.
